What is semaglutide?

Semaglutide is an injectable drug used for years in the management of diabetes and shown to have weight loss benefits. Semaglutide belongs to a class of medications called glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1). It is sold under the brand names Ozempic (to treat diabetes) and Wegovy (to treat obesity). Semaglutide mimics the GLP-1 hormone, which interacts with parts of the brain to suppress your appetite and signal you to feel full. When used in conjunction with diet and exercise, it can result in significant weight loss, as well as reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes; in people who are overweight or obese.

How does semaglutide work?

Using semaglutide causes patients to eat less and feel fuller. It also slows down how quickly the stomach empties, which causes you to feel fuller, longer.

What are the side effects of semaglutide?

The most commonly reported side effects are nausea, diarrhea, and constipation, which occurs in about 25% of patients. We titrate your medication up slowly, to allow your body time to adjust to the medication, and lessen the side effects.

Am I a good candidate for semaglutide?

Patients with a BMI over 30 (or 27 if they have a medical condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol) can benefit from semaglutide. Patients who have not lost at least 5% of their weight in 3-6 months with lifestyle changes alone, are also good candidates. Patients with a history of pancreatitis, endocrine tumors (MEN 2), or thyroid cancer should avoid use of semaglutide.

How quickly should I expect to see results?

On average, most patients lose about 2 pounds per week; keeping in mind that each person’s situation is unique. There is no “one size fits all approach”. It usually takes several months to see the full effect, as you start on a low dose, which is titrated up monthly. A 2022 study (STEP 5 trial) found that on average, adults using semaglutide lost about 35 pounds (15% of body weight); in contrast to the placebo group, which lost about 6 pounds (2.5% of body weight).

Other important considerations:
  • Semaglutide is not a lifetime drug for weight loss. It is designed to help boost your weight loss; especially when used in combination with healthier lifestyle choices.
  • We recommend a nutrient rich diet - consisting of fruits, veggies, and lean proteins. Attempt to eliminate processed foods as much as possible.
  • Move your body! Do anything that keeps you active and moving. This could be a walk outside, dancing, biking - whatever you enjoy! Regular exercise improves your overall general health and well-being.
  • Get your rest. Try to get 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night. Studies show that lack of sleep contributes to weight gain.
  • Remember, this is a marathon, not a sprint! Give yourself some grace as you navigate your weight loss journey. There will be ups and downs, but consistency and perseverance are the keys to success!
